Sarasota County SOE Launches Get Out the Vote Campaign

Supervisor of Elections works with local employers to
“Get out the Vote”

(SARASOTA, FL, June 16, 2004) – Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent is teaming up with some of the county’s largest employers to give workers an opportunity to register to vote or update their voter records prior to the August 31 and November 2 elections.

SOE staff will set up voter registration tables, demonstrate the touch screen voting machine, and answer questions about the elections process at the following workplaces during the week of June 21-25:

FCCI Insurance Group, Monday, June 21, 11:30 am-1:30 pm
WWSB (ABC Channel 7), Tuesday, June 22, 1:30-3:30 pm
The Pines of Sarasota, Thursday, June 24, 11 am-2 pm
Sarasota Herald-Tribune, Friday, June 25, 1-4:30 pm

The SOE will also conduct voter registration at a series of welcome back events for Sarasota County Public Schools instructional staff on Wednesday, Aug 4.

Other employers partnering with the SOE to date include Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Bon Secours Venice Hospital, Doctor’s Hospital of Sarasota, and PGT Industries, all of whom will host voter registration drives for their employees in September.

The SOE-employer partnerships have been formed in conjunction with the statewide “Get out the Vote” (GOTV) campaign, announced last month by Florida Secretary of State Glenda Hood and the state’s 67 supervisors of elections. Scheduled GOTV activities include two Register at Work weeks (June 21-25 and Sept 20-24), Register at your House of Worship weekend (July 9-11), and Register at School week (Sept 13-17).
The GOTV campaign is supported by the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Latino Coalition.

Ms Dent invites all employers, schools, and houses of worship in the county to join her in making sure that Sarasota voters have every opportunity to take part in the electoral process. To participate in the “Get out the Vote” campaign or request more information, one may contact the SOE voter education/community outreach coordinator at 861-8610.
