Students needed to work at the
polls in primary and general elections
(SARASOTA, FLA, June 7, 2004) – Supervisor
of Elections Kathy Dent is appealing to high school and university students
who are registered (or pre-registered) to vote in Sarasota County to
sign up now to work at the polls in the August 31 primary and November
2 general elections. Student poll workers are needed in every precinct
to help meet election day human resources needs.
The student poll worker program, which began in 2002, has employed hundreds
of 17- and 18-year-olds at the polls on election day and has given them
a first-hand look at the election process. In addition students may
receive community service hours for state-required training and earn
$110 per election worked.
Students may apply in person at any of the three SOE offices in Sarasota
(101 S. Washington Blvd.), Venice (4000 S. Tamiami Trail), or North
Port (13640 Tamiami Trail) and must bring their Social Security card,
driver license, and voter ID card. Students may contact the SOE office
for an application, or download one from the SOE Web site at www.srqelections.com.
Students must apply before August 10 to work in the August 31 primary.
For more information, visit the SOE Web site or contact the poll worker
coordinator at 861-8640.
