Student poll worker recruitment
underway for primary and general elections
(SARASOTA, FLA, March 23, 2004) –
Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent invites high school and university
students who are registered (or pre-registered) to vote in Sarasota
County to sign up now to work at the polls in the August 31 primary
and November 2 general elections.
The student poll worker program, which began in 2002, has employed hundreds
of 17- and 18-year-olds at the polls on election day and has given these
students a first-hand look at the election process.
“Besides becoming a valuable new source of workers, students adjust
easily to the new technology at polling stations and have served their
fellow workers, the voters and the community commendably,” Ms.
Dent said.
Students may apply in person at any of the three SOE offices in Sarasota
(101 S. Washington Blvd.), Venice (4000 S. Tamiami Trail), or North
Port (13640 Tamiami Trail) and must bring their social security card,
driver license, and voter ID card. Students may contact their government
teachers or the SOE office for an application, or download one here.
Student poll workers are required by law to attend training prior to
each election, for which they may receive community service hours, and
will be paid $110 for each election worked. Student training for the
August 31 election will be held in mid-August, and for the November
election in October.
