Supervisor
of elections office recruits high school students
to work at polls (SARASOTA, FL, August 27, 2002) – Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections, Kathy Dent, has appointed more than 50 Sarasota County high school students to help at the polls during the primary election on September 10. The program to recruit and train the 17 and 18 year-old students was launched this year after discussions between Ms. Dent and the Sarasota County School Board. All of the county’s six high schools were invited to take part in the program. To participate, students must be nominated by a teacher or other school official. Students are excused from school to work at the polls on Election Day. “The program establishes a unique partnership between county election and school officials, designed to improve the voting process and involve hundreds of Sarasota’s young citizens each year in a fundamental American privilege and responsibility. It will also help to reverse the decline in the number of people who vote. I hope this program will inspire and motivate students to become actively involved in their government and in the voting process,” Dent said. Student poll worker training will be conducted on Saturday, August 31
from 9 A.M to noon at the Supervisor of Elections Voting Equipment Facility
located in the ICOG Building, 1001 Sarasota Central Boulevard. | |||
