SOE LAUNCHES SARASOTA COUNTY VOTES WEEK

(Sarasota, Fla., Feb 14, 2002) – Sarasota County voters will have an opportunity to see demonstrations of the county’s new touch-screen voting machines and to cast sample ballots during “Sarasota County Votes Week”, beginning Feb 17.  The demonstrations are part of a major community outreach program, launched by Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent, to familiarize local voters with the new equipment prior to the March and fall elections.

“In coming elections, Sarasota County will be using the nation’s most modern, accurate system for casting and counting votes.  Our goal is to reach all voters so that, before they walk into their polling places, they will know how to cast their ballots on the new touch-screen system,” Dent said.

Elections office staff have been demonstrating the touch-screen voting machines at meetings of civic organizations, community groups, clubs and condominium associations countywide since last November.

“The demand for demonstrations has been strong, and the public’s response to the new, state-of-the-art system has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Dent, who will kickoff the week-long event with a demonstration of the new equipment on Sunday, Feb 17 at David Cohen Park adjacent to the Newtown Community Center , from 3:30-6:00PM .
