Message from Karen Crete

Dear Clerks and Assistant Clerks:

Overall, Election Day was smooth, and we are relieved that our inaugural paper ballot election is now completed.  We, in the poll worker department, wanted to tell you how much we appreciate your commitment to the process and your passion for democracy.  Eleven weeks is a very small window to implement a new voting system.  Your willingness to learn, study and use new procedures at the precinct is a major part of our success. We always say this and truly mean it…you are such an integral part of the process, and we cannot conduct an election without you.

Each election seems to provide an opportunity for improvement and this one was no different.  We were surprised at the turnout and know that an increase in your staff would help the process run more smoothly.  Recruitments for additional poll workers are underway for upcoming elections.  If you know anyone who would like to join your precinct team, refer him/her to our office at 861-8641 or visit our website at www.srqelections.com .

We know of areas that need improvement.   For example, the clerk’s supply pick-up and drop-off procedures need review.  We cannot do much about the weight of the ballots but hope the carts and greeters at the drop-off sites helped you.  The ballot procedures were solid; however, we will enhance some of the procedures before the next election.  Reconciliation will be a focus for the January election training cycle, although almost everyone accomplished this task with relative ease.  There are some other minor areas of concern, and these will also be addressed in training.

A few of you have taken the time to email or call with recommendations and I always welcome your input.  Please, if you have time, pass along anything that happened in your precinct and suggest how we might improve.  Email Karen at kcrete@srqelections.com .   Also, if you are not able or planning to work in the January election, please let Pam know ASAP.

In closing, thanks for all you do.  Remember, now that we have that first election under our belt, January’s election will be so much easier.  Training will begin in early January and we will be in touch shortly with your assignment.

Happy Holidays….Pam Cutrone, Eileen Everhart and Karen Crete
